Corbett National Park, established in 1936 with the name Hailey National Park and renamed as Ramganga National Park in 1952, got its present name in 1957 after Jim Corbett, the famous naturalist and photographer. This is India's first national park and beyond doubt the most attractive Park in India. The Park is placed in the foothills of the Himalayas, in the midst of lush greenery and uneven mountains with varying heights, ranging from about 1300 feet to nearly 4000 feet. It is believed that the place, mostly lying on the banks of Ramaganga River, has prospered an ancient civilization.

The main attraction of tourists and wild life enthusiasts to this Park is that the majestic view of Tiger with all its wildness in this Park. This park is a natural habitat of the rare species of Tigers that are facing extinction. It is a place draws huge tourist inflow and offers excellent sightseeing. The headquarters of Project Tiger, Ramnagar is a good place to stay.

Corbett National Park is famous for its wealthy flora and fauna. Also the wild animals, reptiles and bird with many varieties of species enrich the Park and it is haven for bird watchers, wild life enthusiasts, environmentalists and nature lovers. Very rich in vegetation, if we take statistics there are about more than 51 different kinds of shrubs, more than 30 kinds of bamboos and over 110 different species of trees, apart from the greenish grass seen only in meadows.


The Park, renowned for the majestic leopards and elephants, caters for the life of many rare species of mammals, birds and reptiles, more than 25 species of reptiles, 585 kinds of birds and over 50 varieties of mammal species. If one is interested he can indulge lively with deers, spotted in Corbett National Park, barking deer, spotted dear, sambar, chinkara are some of the different kinds of species seen in the Park.

The climate in the Corbett National Park is temperate through the year but the best time to visit the national park is from 15th November till as during that time all the regions of the park are open for public.

Winter (November to February) has a temperature variation of 5 °C to 30 °C.Winter mornings can be foggy but pleasant afternoon makes it a good time for enjoying safari.

Summer (March to May) touch 40°C and the average temperature is about 30°C. Wildlife enthusiast should prefer booking Corbett tour package during this season as this period is perfect for animal sighting. They can move around the Park and enjoy wildlife safaris.

Monsoon (June to September) offer heavy rainfall; there can be light rainfall intermittently whole through the year. The Corbett Waterfalls, a small but awesome view, is from a height of about 60 feet and is in the backdrop of scenic greenish forest. Birjani Tourist Zone is a very popular area of the spectacular Corbett Tiger Reserve. This zone is enriched with a huge number of floral and faunal species. Birjani gives a tough competition to Dhikala zone while the tourist’s preferences are concerned. The zone is known for its wonderful landscape and is very calm and quite place. The beauty of this place is appreciated by all the visitors. This is one of the most tiger rich areas of the park.Birjani consists of a mixed topography with dense Sal forests combined with grasslands. The entry to this zone is through Aamdanda Gate. 


With in Bijrani Zone, Forest rest houses are located in Bijrani and Malani. The rest house at Bijrani has six rooms (Four with double beds and two with single bed) and dormitory consisting of four beds. The compound has its own restaurant and canteen. Elephant rides into the jungle are available from here. The region is frequented by wild animals and birds unperturbed by the human interventions. The chances of spotting a tiger, Sloth bear and herd of elephants are quite high in this part of the park. The rest house in Malani has two rooms (Double bed) and is very popular among bird watchers and tourist seeking a peaceful place. The picturesque beauty of Birjani is magnificent. It is endowed with wide grass lands, thick forests and huge water drains and inspiring count of flora and fauna. 


Bijrani safari zone is highly endowed with rich diversity of flora and fauna. Bijrani zone, situated at a suitable distance from Ramnagar is the most preferred zone for Wildlife enthusiasts visiting the park for day visit. It gives its visitors a wonderful experience of the beautiful forests.



Jhirna is located on the southern periphery of Corbett Tiger Reserve. 

The animal population also comprises sloth bear and wild elephants which provide great sights for the wild life enthusiasts. Jhirna zone is open throughout the year. The Jhirna jeep safari zone is one of the most eye-catching spots inside the Corbett Tiger Reserve.

Day visit to Jhirna Zone is through Dhela Gate which is 20 Kms from Ramnagar. Its main topography mainly constitutes deciduous and secondary forest interspersed with plush open grasslands that offer amazingly good visibility of wild animals.


Durga Devi Zone is the hill safari zone filled with wildlife beauty and adventure within the Corbett Tiger Reserve. Located at the North-Eastern side of the reserve, this area is cris crossed by Ramganga and Mandal rivers at several places. This zone is particularly famous for sighting wild elephants and Otters at Domunda Bridge. Famous Mahsheer fish can also be seen in the river water of Durga Devi zone. Lush green forest in this range provides ample opportunity for bird watching as well.

Tourist can stay for night in Lohachaur Forest Rest House of this zone. Visitors can take Jeep safari to enjoy wildlife in the zone. Booking for the zone can be done using the official website. Durga Devi Zone is open for visitors from 15 October to 15 June and remains closed during monsoon season. 



Dhikala is one of the most popular sought after tourist accommodation in Corbett Tiger Reserve. Herd of elephants and spotted deers pack the vast expanse of famous Dhikala Chaur. This is probably the best place in the Tiger Reserve to spot very rare Hog Deer.

Staying at Dhikala is an experience every wildlife enthusiast looks forward to. Dhangari gate is entrance for Dhikala zone. Dhangari gate is located 18 kms away from Ramnagar while Dhikala Tourist Complex is located 31 Kms inside the Dhangari Gate. Dhikala is open for tourists from 15th November to 15th June. But remains inaccessible during Monsoon season. Dhikala tourist complex overlooks Ramganga Reservoir and is a perfect place to observe Crocodiles and Gharials basking in the banks of Ramganga. 

Different kinds of accommodations are available at Dhikala. Along with the Forest Rest House, Cabins, Hutment, Annexe Dhikala also has 24 bunk beds in Log Huts. The rooms are comfortable with basis amenities.

A very good restaurant caters to the need of visitors staying in the Dhikala Tourist Complex. The restaurant serves buffet meals with good choice of quality foods. A small Canteen is also available for the visitors. 

Visitors can enjoy wildlife movie show in the evening and also spend their leisure time reading books in the well stocked library.


This is the newest and sixth eco-tourism zone that was opened for tourists in December 2014. Dhela Ecotourism zone remains open for tourists throughout the year. 

This zone is extremely rich in flora and fauna. The zone spreads over 1,173 hectares, which has mixed forests of Sal, Rohini, Haldu, Bahera, Kusum vegetation, and tigers, leopards, Asiatic elephants, sloth bears and king cobras. The area is particularly rich in bird diveristy.

Elephant rides are offered at Dhikala, Khinanauli, Bijrani, Gairal and Jhirna during mornings and evening so that tourists can get a closer view of the jungle, its wildlife, and landscape. Elephant rides offer a unique experience There are watchtowers at Dhikala, Phulai and Jhirna, and several machans near Dhikala, Bijrani and Kothirau to facilitate the viewing of wildlife. During evenings the lodgers at Dhikala and Bijrani can enjoy films on wildlife that are screened to provide an educative entertainment to visitors. Dhikala also has a well-stocked library, which has a fine collection of books concerning wildlife and general topics. 


Corbett Tiger Reserve is one of the richest bird regions of India. Nearly 600 species of birds also make Corbett a special place. Sightings of birds species like the Collared falconet, Great Hornbill, Great Slaty Woodpecker, Pallas's Fishing Eagle, Lineated Barbet, Spot-bellied Eagle Owl, Pin-tailed Green Pigeon, Red-headed Vulture, Lesser Racket-tailed Drongo and white-tailed Rubythroat are avid birdwatcher's delight.


By Flight
The closest domestic airport to Corbett National Park is 50 kms away from Corbett National Park at Phoolbagh, Pantnagar. At 295 Km from Corbett National Park, the nearest International Airport is at Delhi. The major air link for tourists coming from northern parts of India is at Dehradun and Lucknow. Preferably, passengers availing flight from within India, or other parts of the world, should land down either to Palam Airport (domestic) or to Indira Gandhi International Airport (International), New Delhi, accordingly. Both the airports have well facilitated air links within as well as outside India.

By Train
The closest railway station to Corbett National Park is Ramnagar, which is 12 km from the Park. Ramnagar is the terminus of Delhi-Moradabad-Ramnagar broad gauge branch of North East Railway.

By Road
